When Easter attacks happened, one of my friends who had migrated said “thank god we left Sri Lanka”. It’s not the first or the last, I’ve heard hundreds of them from different people “Aiyo why aren’t you’ll applying for PR”, “there’s no future in Sri Lanka”, “Politicians have ruined it, there’s no hope”
We’ve let our country be ruined, we’ve abandoned it, we’ve taken it for granted. We’ve watched our motherland get screwed, we’ve waited. Our country will only change when its people will change for better, when its people are grateful.
Being Sri Lankan is a choice in a world where countries allow you to skill migrate, asylum migration and we find 101 fraudulent ways to get out of this island.
Being Sri Lankan to me, is not a birth right, it’s a choice. I will choose her among continents, among luxury, among thousands of “better life” in other lands, I will choose her, without a pause, without a doubt, i will choose to be Sri Lankan, always. In a heartbeat.
